The band worked and re-worked the groove of this tune until finally settling on a reggae feel. It never felt quite right when it was fast, and the backbeat of a reggae seemed to lift it out of a dismal character from the lyrics.
Hilary is quite obsessed with any folksongs dealing with turning dead body parts into musical instruments. Hilary used this idea as inspiration to write Poor Bird. A girl sees a sparrow and she fantasizes about being able to fly. The bird is actually an evil presence embodied, He takes advantage of the girl by killing her and using her body parts to strengthen himself and his nest.
